Hybrid Cells

 

About:

  • This is a new invention where Li-Ion cells and a super-capacitor/other storage system is combined to form new technology. 

  • This is to balance power density and energy density requirements.

  • The range is one of the biggest barriers towards the acceptance of electric vehicles. 

  • This technology aims at increasing the range of electric vehicles and makes the use of two battery packs where the second one is activated after the first battery reaches a certain SOC level. 

Technology Description:​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  • This battery type consists of a conventional battery pack coupled with a metal-air cell. 

  • The anode of the metal air-cell can be made of Aluminium, Zinc, Magnesium, Iron, Vanadium. 

  • The cathode is a porous structure with catalytic properties.  

  • The metal-air battery pack is activated when the SOC of the conventional battery reaches a certain level.  

  • It can also charge the conventional battery if required.  

  • This patent was filed by Tesla and aims to increase the vehicle range above 600 km.
